Organic Soil Solutions uses a number of products and services to improve the health of your soil and lawn.

Soil test We usually start the program with a soil food web analysis that measures the chemical structure of the soil. It tells us the pH and the amount of organic matter in the soil. It measures calcium, potassium and magnesium and the action exchange capacity, which indicates the ability of the soil to hold nutrients. The soil test gives us an idea of the present state of the soil and allows us to measure progress as we improve soil characteristics. We also check thatch levels, soil compaction and root depth.

Compost tea is applied as often as possible.  The tea is a water extract of compost that is full of beneficial bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes.  It is brewed for 24 hours and must be used in six hours, before all that biology uses up the oxygen and it becomes anaerobic.. Our tea is tested regularly to assure the right mix.  The soil biology we add store nutrients, fix nitrogen, break down organic matter and decompose toxins.  They improve soil structure, water retention and promote root growth.  We start the program in early spring by applying compost tea with liquid fertilizer.

Spring Lawn Fix includes seeding of bare spots and weed areas with a spring mix which germinates quickly and crowds out weeds. We top dress with excellent, tested compost that has plenty of biological diversity and organic matter. It is essential to have grass growing where weeds want to intrude. Mowing high will help the roots develop and shade out sun loving annual weeds.

Organic granular fertilizers are some of the other products we use to stimulate growth and add slow release nutrients to the soil. We use a starter fertilizer when we over-seed. Other fertilizers contain soy based proteins, feather meal, cotton seed meal, kelp and other organic products. We vary products based on the weather and the condition of your lawn. Organic fertilizer not only feeds the plant, but also provides organic matter for the soil biology to break down and store for later use.

Humate blend is a granular organic soil conditioner which actively promote microbial life that improves moisture and nutrient retention, enhances root development and rebuilds the soil. Our blends also includes kelp, a traditional soil conditioner, that contains micronutrients for both soil and plant.. We apply humates in the late fall to maintain the soil and roots. Some of our organic fertilizers also contain humates.

Limestone adds necessary calcium and corrects soil pH. Maintaining proper pH levels in your soil increases the availability of nutrients to your lawn and garden. We test the pH every year to check progress and assure proper applications.

Fall Lawn Fix includes over-seeding selected areas with a cool season mix of bluegrass, fescues and perennial rye. We use a slice seeding and de-thatching machines to scarify the soil and incorporate the seed. We also add an organic starter fertilizer and compost to increase organic matter and improve the microbial life of the soil.

Nematodes For recurring grub or other insect problems, we apply various species of beneficial nematodes. These microscopic worms are natural dwellers of the soil that are parasites on grubs and other invasive species. Usually, we apply nematodes when grubs are active in the spring and fall.

Lawn mowing A number of our customers have difficulty getting the people who mow their lawn to cut the grass high, and leave the clippings. We consider both these practices essential for a healthy lawn, so we have added lawn mowing to the program. Every time the lawn is scalped, it is stressed. The plants must work quickly to produce more leaf surface in order to perform photosynthesis and survive. To do this, they have to use up whatever food is stored in the roots. The result is shallow roots and the need to continuously feed and water the plant artificially. The clippings act as a mulch to prevent weed seed germination and preserve moisture. It also adds organic matter and a third of the nitrogen needs of the plant. Clippings do not cause thatch. Because the plant has to continuously compensate for lost leaf surface, mowing low requires more cutting, not less.

Core aeration and compost top dressing  For compacted soils with low organic matter or sod lawns that need to establish roots we offer core aeration with a top dress of pelletized compost.  We can also use the core aerator to overseed sparse lawns that need to thicken up.
