The bacteria are getting a lot of respect lately. We know that 90% of the cells in our bodies are bacteria and most snowflakes are wrapped around bacteria, but now scientists are discovering extremeophiles. They used to think that life could not exist above the boiling point, but now they have discovered bacteria that flourish at 230 degrees and live miles below the surface.

A New York Times headline says it all, "Strange New Microbes Hint at a Vast Subterranean World". The total mass may exceed that of all surface life. The most effective way to kill crab grass may be with an herbicide, but the best way to control it is with a healthy lawn. Crab grass likes compaction, heat and lots of sunlight. It is an opportunistic summer annual that doesn’t get a chance in a vigorous, dense turf. To reduce crab grass, water only when necessary and then, provide a thorough and deep soaking. Frequent, light watering can promote crab grass germination. Mow high and leave the clippings.

Any of you who have been with us for a few years have known and worked with Edson Dorigo. It has been my pleasure to see his smiling face just about every day of the seven years I have owned the company. The kid who used to break everything has become the man who fixes everything. Edson has always been pleasant and cheerful, hard working and careful, willing to learn and happy to do the best job possible. Any workshop on organic lawn care will find him in the front row. He will often say of a customer, "He is a good man" or, "They are nice people" and he really means it. Edson is not impressed by pretense and rarely speaks ill of anyone.

Edson have taught me a lot about treating people with respect. He has inspired me with his hard work and determination. Last month we had a fire at our house and my family and our office had to move to a hotel. Edson stepped in to keep things going during Organic Soil Solutions' busiest time. Whenever I feel I've pushed him too far, he smiles wearily, and offers some bright and optimistic pearl of wisdom to lift my spirits.

A couple of years ago, Edson wrote a screen play in the off season. He obtained funding and it was produced, starring Edson Dorigo and some professional actors flown in from Brazil. Now he needs time off to meet with Broadway producers in New York while dining at fancy restaurants. Really.

Edson Dorigo will be leaving Organic Soil Solutions on December 1. If you see him around, wish him well. We will miss him dearly, but this talented young man has new worlds to conquer.
